INTERFAITH
PARTNERSHIP HELPS HEAT-UP ST. LOUIS
In
partnership with the Archdiocese of St. Louis and the St. Louis
Metropolitan Clergy Coalition, IP encourages congregations to take
up a special collection or donation on the weekend of February 4
through 6 to support Heat-Up St. Louis. Heat-Up St. Louis
is a regional, independent non-utility, energy assistance and advocacy
charity to assist needy senior citizens, disabled individuals, and
poor households with small children. The group started four
years ago with mostly members of the laity of Christian and Jewish
faiths and has since expanded to include the broader interfaith
community.
100%
of all tax-deductible donations are directed to the needy through
the partnership of 13 area social service and community action agencies
who qualify the households based on income eligibility and health.
Donations are accepted through March 1. Last year Heat-Up
St. Louis collected more than $10,000.
If you have any questions, call Tim Gorline at (314) 241-0001, ext.
14. Anyone needing assistance, please direct them to the resource
hotline at (314) 241-7668. For more information, visit the website

These are among the questions that will be addressed as the Interfaith
Partnership offers the "Many Faces of Faith" series.
Each forum will include a panel discussion and dialogue between
faith leaders sharing various perspectives of the same faith.
Those attending will have an opportunity to interact with panelists.
More details forthcoming.

Abraham's
Children Launches Faith in Action Initiative
In
2005, Abraham's Children will empower congregations to strengthen
their health advocacy efforts through the Abraham's Children
Faith in Action initiative. Throughout the year, Abraham's
Children will identify several key health-related activities
and call on the faith community to support these activities
through active participation and advocacy. Abraham's Children
will then present a Faith in Action award to the congregation
with the highest level of involvement. The selected congregation
will be presented with a Faith In Action award as well as
a contribution to support future health initiatives.
The first
Abraham's Children Faith in Action opportunity is the National
Women's Heart Day Health Fair on Friday, February 18, 2005
. Did you know that heart disease is the number one
cause of death for women in the United States? Abraham's
Children encourages the faith community to get involved in
the fight against this deadly - yet highly preventable - disease.
Encourage women from your congregation or faith community
to attend the event and/or encourage women from your faith
community to attend as a group. Attendees should stop
by the registration table to sign the Faith in Action roster.
The National Women's Heart Day Health Fair is sponsored by
the Sister to Sister
organization. For more information click here
or contact Kassandra Alcaraz at the IP office.
Healthy
Mind-Body-Spirit
Ask
the Doctor
On
Sunday, December 5, Friendly Temple MBC hosted an Ask
the Doctor event as part of the Healthy Mind-Body-Spirit
(HMBS) project. Following a worship service focusing
on health, physician panelists Katharine Mathews, Michael
Railey and Collins Lewis answered questions on topics such
as hypertension, diet, exercise, joint pain, depression and
fertility. Most interesting was the array of questions
asked. Sixty-six people attended the event. Ask
the Doctor wraps up almost a year of Friendly Temple's
participation in HMBS. In the coming weeks, health
advocates from Friendly Temple's congregation will be trained
to strengthen and focus their health initiatives and develop
a post-HMBS plan.
HMBS
Clergy Forum
On Tuesday,
December 14, a lunch forum was held for clergy and others interested
in finding out more about the HMBS project. This event provided
an opportunity to discuss the program, answer questions and
find out whether groups would be willing to partner with others
in the same neighborhood to form a cluster. Current participants
spoke about the congregation's experiences and involvement in
the program. Many forum attendees wanted to learn how
HMBS could be implemented within their congregation.
A total of 23 people representing 11 congregations attended
the event.
Healthy
New Year
On
Sunday, January 9, Lane Tabernacle CME Church hosted a Jogging
for Jesus event. Following a sermon focused
on fitness and healthy living for the New Year, the event
officially began with a keynote speech by Dr. Michael Railey,
HMBS Medical Director. Attendees were able to try out
different form of fitness activities - from dance aerobics
to free weights to wheelchair exercises. Volunteers from SSM/DePaul
Health Center and Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. conducted blood
pressure screenings and Body Mass Index assessments.
A relaxation session was held for those wanting to cool down
after the event. Approximately 175 people attended
the event, which was recently highlighted in the St. Louis
American .
