The
foundation of Christian belief is the same Monotheism - One God,
Creator and Sustainer of the
universe
brought forth and directs all forms in the universe. Christianity
begins in the God of Abraham, but is founded on the belief that
Jesus of Nazareth is the fulfillment of the prophecies of Hebrew
Scriptures, which held that a Messiah, or anointed one, would
be sent by God. Jesus, himself revealed the central Christian
doctrine of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the
Holy Spirit); that in the person of Jesus, God the Son took on
human form so that he might teach and save humankind; and of the
Compassionate nature and Unity of God with all his creation. The
Christ, Jesus, taught that the greatest commandments are To Love
God with your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul and
strength; and to Love your neighbor as yourself.
The
three major divisions of Christianity are understood to be: Roman
Catholic; Protestant; and Orthodox, though there are a great many
varying forms and names of particular sects and practice within
these. The major concentration of Christian practice is found
in the West - in the Mediterranean basin, Europe and the Americas.
